A community story from Ellie Karl, submitted to Because of Soccer.
"Because of Soccer I have learned to love; not only the game but how to love myself, my teammates, my mistakes, my rivals, my friends, and my family."
A Love That Started at Four Years Old
For Ellie Karl, soccer has never just been a game. She started playing at four years old, and from that moment it became something far deeper — an escape, a motivation, and an anchor she could always count on.
“Soccer has been my love for as long as I can remember. I started when I was four, and ever since then it's been more than just a game to me. It's been my escape, my motivation, and something I could always count on.”
The Game That Gets You Through
Like every player who has given their heart to the game, Ellie has faced her share of hard moments. But through every one of them, soccer was there. It taught her discipline, perseverance, and something harder to put into words — how to become a better person.
“Through all the ups and downs, soccer has been there, helping me get through things when nothing else could. It's taught me discipline, how to keep going when things get hard, and honestly how to be a better person.”
Now competing at the Division I level, Ellie sees her collegiate career as proof of everything the game has made possible. It's not an arrival — it's a reflection of a lifetime of love and hard work.
“Now getting the chance to play at the college level means everything to me, because it shows how far this game has taken me. It's not just something I play, it's a part of who I am and I couldn't imagine my life without it.”
Learning to Love Because of Soccer
What makes Ellie's story stand out is the breadth of what soccer has taught her to love. Not just the game — but herself. Her teammates. Her mistakes. Her rivals. Her friends and her family.
“Because of Soccer I have learned to love; not only the game but how to love myself, my teammates, my mistakes, my rivals, my friends, and my family. From being a little girl on the field who loved to win to now becoming a D1 soccer player it has been HARD but because of my love for the game it's made it the most enjoyable part of my life. I love the challenges it brings me and I love the life I've created for myself Because of Soccer.”
That's what the beautiful game does. It doesn't just make you a better player — it makes you someone who knows how to show up, how to love fiercely, and how to find joy even in the hard parts.
